Loop Closing places commercially available composting machines where dumpsters once stood providing a path to zero waste. Instead of hauling food waste “away,” we compost it on-site, where it’s generated, thereby elevating the use of food from heading to landfill. Our innovation is deploying a decentralized network that inclusively regenerates our soils, communities, and planet. Similar to distributing personal computers scaling computing capacity far beyond mainframe computers, Loop Closing's aim of distributing on-site composting can scale composting capacity beyond centralized recycling infrastructure. The US is stuck at a recycling rate of 6% without a path to meet ReFED goals of 23% by 2030. Loop Closing’s decentralized approach provides a path to meet and exceed the ReFED goal.

Centralized recycling facilities continue the legacy of the linear system and are historically located in underrepresented communities, often communities of color. Their harms and the deadly air pollution from hauling contribute to the structural inequities the pandemic lays bare. By no means a total solution, Loop Closing’s approach takes steps towards dismantling the linear system’s inequities, with a network that leverages underutilized resources to implement an efficient circular economy that’s regenerative and inclusive on the triple bottom line and for the underserved.

Furthermore, Loop Closing works with reduce and reuse partners to minimize what is composted by first elevating available food to the highest levels of use.

Jeffrey NeaL, Founder and CEO

Before starting Loop Closing, Jeffrey Neal served a 24-year career leading change and solving our most challenging operations and infrastructure problems for our US Navy and Marine Corps Bases around the world.

Frustrated with the devastating problems to our environment and communities caused by our current approach of handling food waste, he embarked on identifying an alternative solution: a distributed composting approach of recycling our food waste on-site.
