Free Online Community Composting course!

Want to start a community-based composting project, but aren’t sure where to start? Involved with an existing community composting initiative, but need to brush up on the best practices for engaging folks in your project? Need to train your staff or project partners in the fundamentals of hot composting?


Developed by ILSR under its Neighborhood Soil Rebuilders Composter Training Program, Community Composting 101 provides an overview of the importance of and science behind composting, and recommended best practices for implementing community-based programs. It includes an introduction and seven video-based training modules, covering the following topics:

  1. The What & Why of Composting

  2. Composting Systems & The Role of Community Composting

  3. Composting Fundamentals & Recipe Development

  4. Building a Compost Pile

  5. Managing the Composting Process

  6. Site Design & Management

  7. Getting Started & Engaging the Community

The course is self-paced, can be completed at any time, and provides an auto-generated certificate of completion. The cost of enrollment is $100. ILSR is dedicated to making their resources accessible to those in need, including frontline, historically disenfranchised, and BIPOC communities. Bulk discounts and individual scholarships are available. Grab a buddy (or five) and enroll together!
